I have come to realize that we all possess a certain level of bravery. Some of the bravest people I know have never ran into a burning building to save someone or given an important speech in front of hundreds of people. What they have done is face some of the toughest challenges that one can experience and come through better than before. Or they continue to live life to the fullest, knowing that the challenge will probably always exist. It's actually quite beautiful to watch courage surface in someone who is faced with adversity. I think it's exhibited best when there is no other option than to survive. Whether it's to survive physically from an illness, mentally from depression or emotionally from grief.
I love the Brave is Beautiful parity of the lion and lotus flower because both exhibit its' own degree of bravery and beauty. The perception of a lion of course is that it is strong and brave, yet it is also a beautiful creature that is captivating. The lotus flower on the other hand starts off its' life not as beautiful as one might think. It first begins to sprout underwater, underneath the surface surrounded by mud, muck, fish, insects and simply rough conditions. Despite these conditions, the lotus flower remains strong and pushes aside the dirty obstacles and makes it way to the surface. We never see it's challenge or see when or how it frees itself from the harsh life conditions that exist beneath the surface. All we see is the beautiful flower that forms - despite of the adversity.
Awaken the lion that sleeps in your heart so that just like the lotus flower, you can rise above adversity.
